Façades and Fables showcases the diverse mediums that have become integral to Jamie Rawding’s artistic repertoire. Her foray into art began with metalsmithing in 1986 at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandra, where she crafted jewelry from sheet metal, wire, and found objects. Over time, she incorporated semi-precious stones and pearls, drawn to the incongruity of combining precious materials with found objects. This fascination extends into her painting, where she renders unassuming building façades in the elegance of oil on canvas.
In 1998, Rawding relocated to Beijing, China, and then to Tokyo, Japan in 2001, experiences that deepened her admiration for both nature and architecture, areas she draws inspiration from for her jewelry designs. Returning to the Pacific Northwest in 2005, she continued her jewelry practice and began exploring photography. In 2018, Rawding enrolled in the Gage Academy of Art’s Classical Atelier program. Since then, she has continued experimenting with other mediums, most recently with encaustic painting—a technique blending pigment with hot wax.
In January 2022, Rawding moved to France, where she now divides her time. Captivated by its architectural beauty and the simple pleasures of everyday life, Rawding began photographing her surroundings and translating them into paintings. Windows and doors emerge as prominent motifs, symbolizing the connection between interior and exterior realms. This body of work reflects her ongoing exploration of finding beauty and joy in the ordinary, a theme that has long resonated throughout Rawding’s art.
