Beth Lyndon is a Seattle-based artist working with cut paper, who exclusively shows work at domicile. She creates a wide variety of subject matter, from animals to ballerinas to natural landscapes and trees. domicile always carries a piece of her work—unless it sells out! Beth is also available for commission work.
I have been an artist since childhood. I studied art as an undergraduate at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and later studied sculpture at the Sorbonne in Paris, with a focus on life drawing, sculpture, and printmaking. I have long been inspired by Henri Matisse, particularly his vibrant use of color, geometric forms, and innovative cut-paper work.
After college, my life took me in many different directions. I spent ten years working in Alaska on Arctic fishing boats, docks, and in factories, often as one of the few women in the Alaskan fishing industry. I spent thirty years racing bicycles recreationally and professionally, eventually becoming a World Champion mountain bike racer in 1996. I also spent thirty years as a physical therapist, coached bicycle racing, and raised two children. These experiences, particularly my years in male-dominated fields, have shaped my lifelong feminism and my admiration for strong, independent women.
About ten years ago, after decades of pursuing other professions and passions, I returned to art, beginning with pastels and pencil. My current practice grew from a collection of accumulated Seattle Times newspapers, which led me to experiment with cutting and arranging newsprint. Inspired by Matisse, I began creating mixed-media collages with cut paper, newspaper, glue, and paint.
My work today combines large-scale imagery of landscapes, animals, plants, and human figures with the intricate details of cut paper and newsprint. My years as a ballet student, together with three decades as a physical therapist, have given me a deep understanding of movement, musculature, and the human form, which I bring to my ballerina figures. I am particularly interested in creating strong female figures that reflect both physical strength and grace.
At the heart of my work is the relationship between the artist and the viewer. I want my pieces to draw you in and encourage you to look closely—to discover the layers, textures, and small details within the larger image. I love transforming something as ordinary as a newspaper into something unexpected, inviting, and entirely new.
